This fixture can be mounted either pointing up or down but we mounted pointing up and it looks quite nice. It has a modern look. It doesn't come with light bulbs. We purchased short compact fluorescents but they had to have a short profile because the glass shades are not tall enough to cover tall bulbs. The glass shades are also very narrow and it is difficult to screw-on the holding nut and the light bulbs. You have to have very small hands and some patience to do this.
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I was looking for a chrome vanity fixture that didn't look like it was from the 70's. This fixture looks modern without looking retro. I like that it is not the typical style fixture you would find in the big box home improvement stores. I bought 4 of them for all my bathrooms. Easy to install. Designer look with bargin pricetag.
